This compilation includes a live version of The Jealous Lover by the Stanley Brothers, from the Silver Creek Ranch in Paris, Va. on 5th August 1956. The show was later released on the Stanley Series, Vol. 3 No. 1 LP, but this recording was made by Mike Seeger whereas the Stanley Series LP was taped by Jeremy Foster.

Tantalisingly, the liner notes say that "The recording made during this live performance ... includes the then popular rock-and-roll number, Shake, Rattle, And Roll." I asked Gary B. Reid about this and there is a recording of the Stanley Brothers playing Shake, Rattle, And Roll from a show at Melody Ranch, Glen Burnie Md. from 9th April 1957, with Curley Lambert on lead vocal. It's possible that either the liner notes are wrong (they do erroneously give the show date as 8th August 1956 rather than the 5th), or that the Mike Seeger tape included the song, but it was omitted on Jeremy Foster's recording. (The version from 9th April 1957 can be heard on youtube.)

The LP and individual songs are available as an MP3/FLAC download from Smithsonian Folkways where you can also download (free) a pdf copy of the artwork and extensive liner notes booklet.

  • Carter Stanley: guitar, vocal
  • Ralph Stanley: banjo, vocal
  • Chubby Anthony: fiddle
  • Curley Lambert: mandolin
  • Lindy Clear: bass

For a detailed breakdown and background to this Stanley's show, check Gary B. Reid's The Music Of The Stanley Brothers book, pages 61 and 80.
