Please rate this album:

After Kenneth Davis left the CMB's in 1995 he met up with Steve Edwards (of Appalachian Trail) and formed The Scott County Boys.

This is their debut release, which was recorded at Sounds Reel Studio in Kingsport, Tn., and it features 10 tracks drawn from the Stanley repertoire, plus the old fiddle tune Cotton Patch Rag.

With the large number of Stanley-related tracks, this album is obviously a labour of love. Kennneth Davis has a great voice, and on this album I think he sings lead on about half of vocal numbers, with Eric McMurray on the remainder. Not all of the vocal work gells completely, but I've heard far worse...

The picking is also more than adequate and the recording is well produced, but the Scruggs style banjo is perhaps not the best fit for such Stanley-centric material, particularly on Ralph's banjo instrumental Hard Times.

All three of The Scott County Boys' albums are available as digital downloads from their website, where they can also be streamed for free.

  • Kenneth Davis: lead & rhythm guitar, lead vocal
  • Steve Edwards: fiddle, baritone vocals
  • Eric McMurray: banjo, mandolin, lead tenor & baritone vocal
  • David Edwards: bass, fiddle
