Please rate this album:

Recorded at Ticknock Studio in Lenoir, North Carolina 8th-9th March 2000, this is a pleasant album of cross-picked guitar with George and James trading licks on ten tunes, plus three which feature just George (Nearer My God To Thee / Nobody's Business) or James (Carter Family Medley).

As both their picking styles are very similar, it's not easy to tell who is in the spotlight at any one time.

The idea for this album came about when Jack Cooke had to take some time off the road, between late 1999 and early 2000, to undergo heart by-pass surgery. George stepped in to fill the gap on bass with the CMB's and he and James got to be good friends as James explains in part of the CD liner notes:-

"I'd been wanting to record with George Shuffler for a long time as he has been the biggest influence on my playing since I first picked up the guitar. The first time I ever met him was at Ralph Stanley's festival in 1986, when he came back for a Clinch Mountain Boys reunion. When he took the stage that day and did 'Will You Miss Me?' with Ralph, I sat there on that hillside with tears runnning down my face. That's powerful stuff! Over the past few years, I've been able to become close friends with George and he and his family are wonderful people. I thoroughly enjoyed our time together on the road working with Ralph. We roomed together, ate together, spent time at each other's home and just generally became good buddies. I recall many nights just sitting up late and listening to him tell stories about the old days of playing on the road with the Stanley Brothers. I'm very proud to try and carry on the style of guitar playing that he's done with so much class for so many years. But most of all I'm proud to have him as my friend! Thank you, George." - James A. Shelton

For some reason this CD isn't particularly easy to find at a decent price.

  • George Shuffler: guitar, bass
