(Man-do-lin FBG001-DVD) 2010
This is a compilation drawn from Ronnie Reno's "Old Time Music Festival" TV show. Two songs are featured by Ralph Stanley from 1993 with Ernie Thacker on lead vocal, plus In The Pines by The Stanley Brothers.
The two Ralph Stanley tracks were re-broadcast on RFD-TV in a 2001 edition of Ronnie's "Old Time Music Festival", which also included a lovely version of Water Lily and a duet of Little Maggie with just Ralph on banjo and Ronnie Reno on mandolin. The show also included an interview, of which part has been also been used on the DVD set, plus an instrumental jam of Wildwood Flower with Jr. Blankenship, and Ronnie's brothers Dale & Don Wayne Reno.
In the interview (on the full show) Ralph mentions that they were half way through recording his Christmas Time With... album, which dates the appearance to sometime around April 1993, a few weeks before Curly Ray Cline retired.
The DVD version of Rank Stranger, where the CMB's are joined by Ronnie, Dale and Don Wayne Reno, fortunately doesn't have the rolling credits which were on the original broadcast. The full 2001 show was also available for a time as a low quality FLV file on the RFD 'Country Club' subscription service.
The version of In The Pines on the DVD by The Stanley Brothers is the same as on the Don Reno and Red Smiley - Bluegrass 1963 DVD, but is poorer quality.
Stanley fans will also get a kick out the Bluegrass Cardinals (Don & David Parmley) peformance, which includes a young Don Rigsby on fiddle and harmony vocal.
If anyone has a hi-definition copy of the full 2001 edition of Ronnie's "Old Time Music Festival" featuring Ralph, please get in touch via the Contact page! (I already have the one from the 'Country Club').
