Ralph Stanley & Joe Isaacs - Satan's Chains / Satan's Chains (Alt. version)

(Freeland Recording Co. FRC-S325) 1995

Satan's Chains / Satan's Chains (Alt. version)

This is a CD single, which I think was promo only, taken from the Ralph Stanley & Joe Isaacs - A Gospel Gathering album.

Two versions of Satan's Chains are included, the album one and an 'alternate' version which is pretty much identical. Comparing them, the only difference is that at around the 2:05 min mark, the alt. version has a 5 second break by James Alan Shelton on lead guitar, whereas the album version has Rickie Simpkins on fiddle. Also the blank space before and after the song is slightly different on each of the single and album cuts.

Satan's Chains is quite a decent song, though I'm not a fan of Shelton Feazell's bass vocals, or the overly clean production. For my money, the raw backstage rehearsal captured in part on The Ralph Stanley Story DVD.

  • Ralph Stanley: vocal
  • John Bowman: guitar??
  • Shelton Feazell: bass vocal
  • Becky Isaacs: vocal
  • Sonya Isaacs: vocal
  • Ben Isaacs: bass, vocal
  • James Alan Shelton: guitar
  • Rickie Simpkins: fiddle
  • Jeff Tolbert: mandolin??
