The Stanley Brothers - I Just Came From Your Wedding / Mama Don't Allow

(King 5688) Aug 1962

I Just Came From Your Wedding

This 7" was recorded at the May 1962 sessions that yielded the Good Old Camp Meeting Songs LP.

I Just Came From Your Wedding was later issued on the Country Folk Music Spotlight LP in Dec 1963, but the Stanley's version of Mama Don't Allow didn't get included on any album until Gusto's Collectors Edition, Vol. 3 in 1983.

Although credited to Carter and Ralph, I Just Came From Your Wedding was written by Len Wright of the Wright Brothers from Beech Mountain, North Carolina. The Wright Brothers version came out on the flipside to Island Creek Mine Fire that was issued in May 1960 (Gold Leaf 106).[1] Len also co-wrote Carolina Mountain Home which was released on Starday and also recorded by the Stanleys on their 'Beneath The Maple' 7" EP (Starday SEP-107) 1959.

Mama Don't Allow seems to be rooted in several songs, but the earliest version I can find which sounds like the 'standard', was recorded by Bill Boyd and His Cowboy Ramblers as Mama Don't Like No Music / The Wind Swept Desert (Bluebird B-6235) 27th Jan 1935.[2] The Stanley's rendition features Chick Stripling doing a novelty 'dancing' break, but is otherwise fairly mediocre.

The version of the 45 with orange 'First Edition' labels was part of a promotion which King ran from August 1962 through into September. Under their special merchandising plan, record dealers could purchase 10 LPs from the King/Bethlehem catalogues, and would receive an extra 3 free 'First Edition' bonus LPs of their choice. There was likewise a similiar deal available on singles.[3]

Both sides of the single can be found on The King Years, 1961-1965 4xCD box set.

For a detailed breakdown and background to the Stanley's sessions, check Gary B. Reid's The Music Of The Stanley Brothers book, pages 132-133 and 161.
