The Stanley Brothers - Memories Of Mother / Paul And Silas

(King 5754) May 1963

Memories Of Mother

This 7" was taken from the Stanley's Good Old Camp Meeting Songs LP, which had been recorded and released the year before.

'Billboard' magazine mentioned the single in their 8th June 1963 edition, giving both sides 4-stars, but without any description.[1]

Memories Of Mother was a re-recording of a song that the Stanley's had previously cut in 1954 (Mercury 70400). On the Mercury release Carter is credited as songwriter, but this later version co-credits both Ralph and Carter. A live version by Ralph was included on the Live In Japan 2xLP, and he re-recorded it again in 1998 with Claire Lynch for the 2xCD Clinch Mountain Country. The song has also been a favourite with the CMB's with versions appearing on Keith Whitley & Ricky Skaggs - Second Generation Bluegrass a Buddy Moore/Ralph Stanley cassette; Lester Pate/Ralph Stanley - Daddy's Rose; Ralph II Stanley & John Rigsby - Clinch Mountain Echoes and Junior Blankenship & Friends - The Newsboy. Sammy Adkins & Buddy Moore also recorded a version when they were in The Mountain Echoes - Hand In Hand With Jesus 1982.

Paul And Silas seems to have been an old traditional spiritual. I think it was first recorded by Joshua White in 1935, although details are elusive.[2] It can, however, be heard on youtube. The Stanley Brothers also re-recorded it in Nov '64 for the John's Gospel Quartet (Wango LP-105), with Ralph also singing a version on Mitchell Van Dyke - My Turn CD.

Both sides of the single can be found on The King Years, 1961-1965 4xCD box set.

For a detailed breakdown and background to the Stanley's sessions, check Gary B. Reid's The Music Of The Stanley Brothers book, pages 130-133 and 160-161.
