The Stanley Brothers - For The Good People

In September 1959, the Stanley Brothers returned to King to record two albums in just two days. At the behest of label boss Syd Nathan, the band were not allowed to use fiddle or mandolin, with Bill Napier switching to lead guitar, and Chubby Anthony sitting out the sessions in an attempt at getting a sound more like the Delmore Brothers.

This was the Stanley Brothers second album of gospel songs to be recorded for King, and like it's companion album Sing Everybody's Country Favorites, it's comprised of songs brought to them by the label or traditional gospel music, which they were already familiar with.

Two singles were issued prior to the album's release: Pass Me Not / When Jesus Beckons Me (King 5313) in Feb 1960; and Mother Left Me Her Bible / Over In The Glory Land (King 5367) in Jun 1960. The album's songs were also divided up and released on three EPs (King EP-461), (King EP-462), and (King EP-463). In Jan 1961, Jordan was also issued on a single coupled with The Angel Of Death (King 5441).

My copy of this album is a stereo version, which as you can see from the rear sleeve has adverts for other later Stanley Brothers albums. The 'Crown' logo on the labels indicates that the pressing was made between 1966-1970.

The album was also later reissued (Gusto/King SK-698) 19??. Nowadays it is probably best found on The Early Starday/King Years, 1958-1961 4xCD box set.

Gary Reid has recently identified the church in the cover photo as Peacham Vermont Congregational Church.
