Please rate this album:

This 2xDVD set features the same live recordings as the companion The Legend Lives On: A Tribute To Bill Monroe 2xCD set, which was recorded at the Ryman Auditorium on 17th April 1997 about seven months after Bill Monroe had died, but with intervening song introductions by Lorrie Morgan and short interviews with some of the performers. Bonus material includes addtional interviews with Jimmy Martin, Alison Krauss and Butch Baldassari, who performed at the concert but sadly didn't get their songs included on the DVD/CD (although Jimmy Martin is on the finale tracks).

Ralph and the Clinch Mountain Boys get to perform two of Bill's classics, Can't You Hear Me Calling and Letter From My Darling (shown here as I Got A Letter).

Ralph had previously helped Bill Monroe record a version of Can't You Hear Me Calling on Bill's Bill Monroe And Stars Of The Bluegrass Hall Of Fame album in 1985, and Bill appeared on Ralph's 1992 version of Letter From My Darling on Ralph's Saturday Night (and Saturday Night / Sunday Morning).

Ralph is also featured at the end of the show in the finale with one of those 'all bands on stage' affairs singing I'll Fly Away and Will The Circle Be Unbroken.

The running order is the same as per the CD set, with the artists performances and finale split so that one song is on 'Disc 1' and the other on 'Disc 2'.

Ralph's rendition of Can't You Hear Me Calling and Letter From My Darling from the DVD can also be found on youtube here and here.

A proportion of the profits on the CD/DVD's went to the Bill Monroe Foundation which oversaw the $3 million restoration of Bill's old home in Rosine, Kentucky[1]... and I think also paid for his grave monument.

  • Jack Cooke: bass
  • James Price: fiddle
