Please rate this album:

This is (obviously) a tribute to Clyde Moody who was Bill Monroe's guitarist between 1940-44, and who went on to have a solo career with his Shendoah Waltz selling over a million copies.[1]

The album features CMB's Curley Lambert on fiddle, and Bill Napier as one of four guitarists. I'm not sure which tracks Bill appears on but Charley Pennell's bluegrass discography credits him with the tenor vocals on I'll Break Out Again Tonight, I Can Tell When I'm Not Wanted, I've Been Talking To The Lord For You and Shake My Mother's Hand For Me.

Backing on the album is largely dominated by the banjo & to a lesser extent fiddle. Curley Lambert's mandolin is featured prominently on the final track Shake My Mother's Hand For Me; and can also be heard on the intro's to The Leaf Of Love & If I Had My Life To Live Over. He also plays a short break on I'll Break Out Again Tonight.

I'm not sure exactly how many of the songs on the album were recorded by Clyde Moody, but from a quick search at least half were originally released by him on singles. The album also features the Charlie Moore composition I've Been Talking To The Lord For You, which he wrote in memory of his recently departed Mother. This is part recitation and makes use of the hymn Pass Me Not.

The liner notes to the album also mention that "Charlie has admired Clyde Moody both as a singer and song writer ever since he can remember and thus came the idea for this tribute album. Charlie plays two finger style guitar in pretty much the same manner Clyde does and attributes his style to Clyde Moody as well as others."

Pretty much everything Charlie Moore recorded is worth a listen, and this album has several good bits.

  • Charlie Moore: guitar, lead vocals
  • Terry Baucom: fiddle
  • Eddie Carroll: guitar
  • Billy Constable: guitar
  • Henry Dockery: bass
  • V.E. Edney: fiddle
  • Ben Green: banjo
  • Tommy Hunter: banjo
  • Curley Lambert: mandolin
  • Bill Napier: guitar
  • Danny Proctor: bass
  • Virgil Shouse: fiddle
