The Stanley Brothers - Old Love Letters / Are You Tired Of Me Darling

(King S-7 1614) c1961

In Person - stereo singles

This is one of five 7" 33⅓ stereo singles that were taken from the Stanley Brothers' In Person LP, although Old Love Letters had been released on regular 45; just prior to the LP (King 5415).

The singles were created for juke box use[1] and issued together with juke-box strips and a reproduction of the In Person sleeve. Most copies I've seen have been offered for sale as individual discs, but recently a complete set went on ebay for $125.

Old Love Letters was first recorded by Joe Maphis & Rose Lee in 1955,[2] and was soon picked up by Jim Reeves who released it on his 'Singing Down The Lane' LP in 1956.[3] Three months after the Stanley's issued their version in Oct. 1960, Portner Wagnoner had a top 10 Country hit with it.[4] Ralph also later re-recorded the song as a duet with Laurie Lewis on his Clinch Mountain Country 2xCD.

Are You Tired Of Me, Darling is a song usually attributed to A.P. Carter, but actually dates back to c1877, with Minstrel song music "Sung with great success by Fred Walz of Sweatnam & Frazer's Minstrels", attributed to G.P. Cook and Ralph Roland.[5] Ralph later included a duet of the song with Sara Evans on his Clinch Mountain Sweethearts CD.

Both sides of the single can now be found on the The Early Starday/King Years, 1958-1961 4xCD set.

For a detailed breakdown and background to the Stanley's session, check Gary B. Reid's The Music Of The Stanley Brothers book, pages 111-114 and 150.
