This Various Artists compilation from October 1960 includes The Stanley Brothers' Christmas Time Is Near, but the version is different to the one that Starday had previously released as a Christmas single in 1958. Towards the middle of the song, the earlier version features a split banjo/fiddle break, whereas this version has a split banjo/mandolin break.

From checking with Gary B. Reid's liner notes to The King Years, 1961-1965 and his later The Music Of The Stanley Brothers book, it looks like the session date on The King Years, 1961-1965 booklet is wrong, and that this version of the song must date from 1960.[1]

The entire album can be heard on youtube, and the Stanley's track can be found on The King Years, 1961-1965. (The earlier version can also be heard on The Early Starday/King Years, 1958-1961).

  • Carter Stanley: guitar, vocals
  • Ralph Stanley: banjo, vocals
  • Curley Lambert?: mandolin
  • Ralph Mayo?: fiddle
  • ???: bass

For detailed information on the songs/sessions check Gary B. Reid's The Music Of The Stanley Brothers book pages 111, 150.
