Various Artists - Wango EP-107

(Wango EP-107) c1967

Side One
Side Two

This 7" Gospel EP is a quite delightful, with some excellent material by Don Reno & Bill Harrell and Clyde Moody, plus two tracks by The Stanley Brothers.

Standin' In The Need Of Prayer had been in the Stanley's repertoire from their early days, with a live radio version also appearing on the Stanley Brothers On WCYB Bristol album. The version of Amazing Grace is also a bit different, as it features Jack Cooke on lead, with George Shuffler and Ralph providing harmony. (Carter, who had laryngitis at the time, was limited to playing guitar on most of the Dec 1963 session.)

Both Stanley cuts had previously been issued on Wango under the 'John's Gospel Quartet' alias, which suggests that the EP was issued after Carter had died, although I'm guessing at a circa 1967 date.

For detailed information on the Stanley Brothers songs/sessions check Gary B. Reid's The Music Of The Stanley Brothers book, pages 174-176, 180-183, 210 and 211-212
