Ralph Stanley - Loving You Too Well / Gonna Paint The Town

(King Bluegrass 730846) 1973

Loving You Too Well

This was the second 7" to be taken from Ralph's The Stanley Sound Around The World album.

Loving You Too Well was first recorded by the Stanley's on their (Mercury-Starday 71207) single, and on this version the verse order is reversed. Ralph later re-recorded the song on the Stanley Brothers Classics: Introducing James King; the Sammy Adkins & Ralph Stanley - You're Still To Blame cassette; and as a duet with Dolly Parton on his Clinch Mountain Sweethearts CD.

Gonna Paint The Town was a shortened version of the old Stanley Brothers number that first appeared on the (Starday 406) single, omitting the opening "She's from the hills of Kentucky..." verse. Ralph later re-recorded the track with Larry Efaw on his I Worship You and Ernie Thacker Holdin' On cassettes.

Note the label misprint - "Gone to Paint The Town"!

Both sides of the single can be found on the Rebel 1971 - 1973 4xCD box set.

  • Ralph Stanley: banjo, vocals
  • Roy Lee Centers: guitar, vocals
  • Curly Ray Cline: fiddle
  • Jack Cooke: bass
  • Ricky Lee: lead guitar
