The Stanley Brothers - I'd Worship You / I'll Take The Blame

(King 5518) Jun 1961

I'd Worship You

This 7" was recorded at the 16th Jan 1961 session for the Stanleys' Sing The Songs They Like Best LP, and released the following June. The LP followed five months later in Nov '61.

I'm presuming I'd Worship You is the 'A' side, as 'Billboard' listed the song first in their 14th Aug 1961 review calling it:- "An authentic performance by this fine standard country act. Side has the true haunting mountain sound as they deliver a weeper". The flip side, I'll Take The Blame, was also described as:- "He now knows what it means to live without the chick... and wants another chance. A strong weeper." Both songs were given 4 out of 5 stars.[1]

According to Gary B. Reid's liner notes to the The Early Starday/King Years, 1958-1961 this session is notable for featuring an electric bass. George Shuffler:- "This colored boy up at King was a staff musician and he was one of the finest old boys that you ever met. He recorded with Chubby Checker, Otis Redding and all theses guys. He bought him a new Fender bass, one of these big jazz masters, the first that they come out with. So we went in to record and he hooked it up and said 'I want to try this'. And I hooked it up and it was easier to play. So, I just sort of made it easy on myself."

Both sides of the single can be found on The Early Starday/King Years, 1958-1961 4xCD box set.

For a detailed breakdown and background to the Stanley's session, check Gary B. Reid's The Music Of The Stanley Brothers book, pages 118-119 and 151-152.
