The Stanley Brothers - Old Time Camp Meeting

This was The Stanley Brothers' fourth gospel album, and although it seems to have been recorded a month after the sessions for Sing The Songs They Like Best, it appears to have been released first, circa April/May 1961.

Although it's not their best work, the album is noteworthy for reverting back to the standard instrument format, without any lead guitar.

The album was featured as Billboard magazine's 'Sacred Spotlight Album' of the week, in the 10 Mar 1962 edition, which said: This is an album that could become a collector's item for true sacred fans. It spotlights first-rate performances by the Stanley Brothers singing a collection of fine sacred tunes. The Brothers handles them with a feeling and sincerity that makes them come alive, and the old-time camp meeting spirit is there. Songs include 'Somebody Touched Me', 'Old Country Church' and 'Mother Call My Name In Prayer'. Fine wax.. ^[1]

The album was cut in two sessions on 7-8th Feb, and only seems to have resulted in one single:- Little Bessie / Village Church Yard (King 5494) in May 1961. Eight of the tracks were also issued on two EPs:- Working On A Building / Mother Called My Name In Prayer // Little Bessie / Campin' In Canaan Land (King KEP-479); and I'm Dying A Sinner's Death / A Few More Years // My Sinful Past / Kneel At The Cross (King KEP-480).

The album was also issued in Canada (Regency LP 750) 196?. Reissued (Gusto K-750) c1975, in Japan (Gusto-Starday VIP 5067) 1978, on cassette (Hollywood HT-522) 1985 and in Canada (Birchmount BM 794) 1976. Nowadays it is probably best found on The King Years, 1961-1965 4xCD box set.
