Another 'deep' catalogue item from Buddy Moore aka Hook And Beans, who played with Ralph in the early '80s.

I'm guessing this cassette was released circa 1982, as the cover photo shows Buddy alongside Ralph and the CMBs at the 1982 World's Fair in Knoxville, Tn. with the fair's 'Sunsphere' standing in the background. The fair ran from 1st May to 31st Oct 1982, with Ralph being scheduled to perform at the shows 'Folklife Festival' in the final week between 25-31st Oct.[1] Ralph also played at the 1982 Redgate Bluegrass Festival, which advertised itself as 'Bluegrass and Camping at the 1982 World's Fair' on the 4th June 1982[2]. It's likely, then, that the cover photo was taken sometime between these two events.

Musically, it's a fairly average effort, with most tracks consisting of perfunctory renditions of Stanley standards. Junior Blankenship injects a bit of energy on lead guitar and contributes lead vocal to his show-piece Mary Ann, but Ralph's contribution seems to be limited to a bit of harmony backing vocal.

I doubt Ralph contributes any banjo either, as the playing style is in a more generic bluegrass style... It could perhaps be Charlie Sizemore as he played banjo on 4 cuts for Curly Ray Cline's Smarter Than The Average Idiot LP, but that is purely speculative. Likewise I haven't a clue who is responsible for the mandolin.

Three tracks:- Mary Ann, Bill Monroe's Can't You Hear Me Calling and the Carter Family's I'm Thinking Tonight Of My Blue Eyes are the earliest studio versions to be recorded by the CMB's.
