Please rate this album:

The material on this album was recorded at three 1961 sessions - on the 16th Jan, when they also cut two tracks for Sing The Songs They Like Best; 20th July and 22nd September. Despite having new material 'in the can', King held back I Can See Through You, and filled out the album with Daybreak In Dixie from the In Person LP.

Prior to the album's release, one single was issued: There Is A Trap / Fast Express (King 5557) in Sep 1961. Another track, Thy Burdens Are Greater Than Mine was also coupled with Jacob's Vision (From For The Good People) on (King 5582) Nov 1961.

There was also a picture sleeve 7" EP produced for the Seeburg 'Little LP' jukebox market, with six of the album tracks included and using the same artwork (see Folk Song Festival EP entry).

Another oddity is a 'First Edition' version of the Mono LP, which has orange labels and an over-print 'Limited Special' logo on the rear sleeve. I asked Gary B. Reid about it and he kindly sent a clipping from 'Cash Box' magazine, which explains that the 'First Edition' was a promotional tool which King started in August 1962 and continued through into September. Under King Records special merchandising plan, record dealers could purchase 10 LPs from the King/Bethlehem catalogues, and would receive an extra 3 free 'First Edition' bonus LPs of their choice. There was also a similiar deal available on singles too.[1]

The album was also released in Canada (Regency LP-791) 196? an later reissued in the US (Gusto SLP-791) 1975 and in Canada (Birchmount BM 794) 197?. Nowadays it is probably best found spread over the The King Years, 1961-1965 and The Early Starday/King Years, 1958-1961 4xCD box sets.

Thanks to Gary B. Reid for solving the 'First Edition' mystery!

For detailed information on these songs / sessions, check Gary B. Reid's The Music Of The Stanley Brothers book, pages 118-119, 128-129, 113-114, 151-152, 158, 159-160 and 150.
