Please rate this album:

This bulk of this album was recorded 16-17 Jul 1964, with Art Stamper on fiddle, Earl Taylor on mandolin/harmonica and George Shuffler on lead guitar. In all eight songs were recorded, and the remainder was filled with three unreleased songs: I See Through You from the July 1961 session for Award Winners At The Folk Song Festival; What About You from the Jan 1961 session for Sing The Songs They Like Best; and Chickie's Old Gray Mule from the May 1962 sessions at the end of their recordings for Good Old Camp Meeting Songs. A fourth 'fill-in' title Your Selfish Heart, was recycled from their King debut The Stanley Brothers And The Clinch Mountain Boys.

The album is a pretty decent effort, and also includes a re-recordng so Our Darling's Gone, which The Stanley's had previously recorded for Rich-R-Tone in late 1947/early 1948 (Rich-R-Tone RRT-435).

Prior to the album's release I See Through You had been issued on a single coupled with Don't Cheat In Our Home Town (King 5869) in Mar 1964. Bully Of The Town / How Bad Do I Feel (King 5920) was also issued in Sep 1964, and a further track, I'm Bound To Ride was also coupled with Don't Step Over An Old Love and released the same month (King 5933) Sep 1964. Later, Rollin' On Rubber Wheels / How You've Tortured My Mind was also issued as a single (King 6005) Sep 1965.

The album cover is taken from a photo shoot which included George Shuffler, but he was cut off for the LP, which also flipped the photo L-R.

Curiously, the stereo version of the LP includes a different take of Chickie's Old Gray Mule to that found on the The King Years, 1961-1965 4xCD box set, with the 2nd & 3rd verses in reverse order. Chick also ends the song by saying "Whoa Boy", instead of "Ohh, you ol' gray booger". Chick had also recorded this song as Johnson's Old Grey Mule on a 45 in 1962 (Emperor 45-EM-19-CS-62)

The album was reissued (Old Homestead OHCS-323) 1986. Nowadays the material is probably best found on The King Years, 1961-1965 4xCD box set, and The Early Starday/King Years, 1958-1961 4xCD box set.
